The Longleaf School of the Arts dance department is entering into an exciting new chapter as we moved into two brand new dance studios with Marley floors, built in ballet barres, and fully mirrored walls.
Here at Longleaf, we offer dance 1 beginning, dance 2 intermediate, dance honors proficient 3, and honors dance 4 aka dance company, which are classes that are primarily based in contemporary dance techniques. However, all dance forms are rooted in solid ballet technique, and that is the rock upon which we build all technique and style. These classes are also infused with jazz, lyrical, modern techniques, and hip-hop.
We also offer the special topics classes of honors ballet with pointe and variations, honors composition, and dance history.
In ballet, students dig deep into the fundamentals, push their technical limits, and learn classical variations and contemporary ballet choreography.
In composition, students study other choreographers and take a deep look at themselves as they explore concepts in composition and improvisation through many different genres.
Dance history takes a deep look at the roots of the oldest art form from prehistory up to present day.
Within our program, we have dancers that come from studios all across the triangle and beyond. Our students are known for their passion, drive, and work ethic. Whether it be a freshman who has never danced in their life, or a senior who has been dancing since they could walk, the sense of community and unity is felt here. The uniqueness of our school is reflected in the uniqueness of our dancers and our program.
We are a charter arts high school. The opportunity that students have at Longleaf to take their art form to the next level is unparalleled by any other school of the public, magnet, charter or private school sector. Students are able to take up to three dance classes (out of 8 total classes) in one school year, allowing them to grow and improve as an artist for hours every day while they simultaneously get a rigorous academic education. Our program is the closest thing to a conservatory that you will find, while students are still able to get a typical high school experience and truly have the best of both worlds.
